How Much Do Yacht Crew Make?
Below Deck vs. Reality in 2026
Compare salary by rank, charter tips, onboard benefits, rotation and U.S. tax rules to understand what a yacht job is actually worth.
Below Deck makes yacht work look like a shortcut to wealth. The real economics are more interesting.
A junior yacht deckhand may earn roughly $2,400 to $5,300 per month, while an experienced captain on a large superyacht may earn $12,000 to $21,000 or more per month in base salary. Chief engineers, chefs, senior officers, pursers and chief stewardesses can also reach six-figure annual compensation.
Base salary is only the starting point. Charter tips, rotation, onboard housing and meals, travel benefits, taxes and personal spending determine what the job is actually worth. Below Deck cast members have an additional distinction: Bravo says they receive normal yacht compensation and tips as well as a production fee.
How much do yacht crew make in 2026?
There is no universal yacht-crew salary. Pay varies with yacht size, position, experience, licenses, private or charter use, motor or sailing program, rotation, itinerary, management responsibility, tips, bonuses and specialized skills.

| Purser | Usually a larger-yacht role | $7,800–$12,200 | $9,500–$15,000 | $94K–$180K |
Annual figures simply annualize the monthly ranges. Seasonal, temporary, day-rate and rotational arrangements can produce different annual totals. Currency, leave, qualifications and the individual employment agreement matter. These are market benchmarks, not guaranteed offers.
On a 60m+ yacht, similar-sounding jobs may sit within large deck, engineering and interior departments. The vessel may also employ an ETO, AV/IT specialist, nurse, trainer, security professional or dive instructor. Asking what “a yachtie” earns is like asking what someone at a hospital earns: the role matters.
What Below Deck gets right—and wrong—about yacht pay
Bravo has explained that cast crew may receive three forms of compensation:
- Regular compensation for their onboard position.
- Charter gratuities.
- A separate production fee for appearing on the program.
Bravo does not publish a standard production-fee schedule by rank or episode. Precise unsourced “per episode” claims should therefore be treated cautiously.
Below Deck tips can be substantial
Bravo reported approximately $195,490 in total gratuities for Below Deck Season 12, or about $15,037 per crew member over the filmed season. It reported approximately $219,000 for Below Deck Mediterranean Season 10, or about $19,900 per crew member. One reported charter produced a $40,000 gratuity—roughly $4,000 per participating crew member.
Those are television-season results, not a promise of ordinary charter income. Filming is compressed, charters are produced for entertainment, and cast members have a separate production relationship.
Salary is only half the story
Compare two people who each earn $70,000 before tax. An office employee might personally spend:
| Expense | Illustrative annual cost |
|---|---|
| Housing | $24,000 |
| Food | $7,200 |
| Vehicle and commuting | $7,200 |
| Total | $38,400 |
A yacht may provide accommodation, meals, uniforms, work transportation, certain travel and training support while the crew member is aboard. This does not increase salary, but it may reduce the cash required to maintain the employee's working life.
That difference can produce an exceptional savings rate. It can also disappear during leave through flights, hotels, nightlife, luxury purchases, a car or housing that is rarely used. Yachting creates an opportunity; it does not guarantee wealth.
Do yacht crew get free housing and food?
Crew generally live aboard while working, and meals are commonly provided. The economic value is real, but crew accommodation is not a luxury apartment. Cabins may be shared, privacy limited and working days extremely long. During guest trips, the distinction between “at work” and “off work” may nearly disappear.
How much can yacht crew make in tips?
Charter gratuities are discretionary. Market guidance varies by region and charter association, but a percentage of the base charter fee is often used as a reference point.
Tip example 1
A $120,000 charter with a 10% gratuity produces $12,000. Divided equally among 10 crew members, that is $1,200 each.
Tip example 2
A $250,000 charter with a 15% gratuity produces $37,500. Divided equally among 12 crew members, that is $3,125 each.
Tips are not salary and are never guaranteed. Bookings, guest expectations, service, weather, mechanical problems, owner use and the yacht's program all affect the result. Crew should not build fixed spending around volatile gratuities.
Private yacht vs. charter yacht
| Private yacht | Charter yacht |
|---|---|
| Usually no recurring charter gratuities | Gratuities can materially increase income |
| Compensation may be more predictable | Total compensation may fluctuate |
| Owner bonuses or gifts may occur | Tips may recur during charter season |
| Often fewer guest turnovers | Back-to-back charters can be demanding |
| Schedule follows owner use | Schedule depends heavily on bookings |
A well-run private yacht with excellent owners, competitive pay and strong rotation can be more valuable than an aggressive charter program. Compare the complete package, not the label.
Rotation may be one of the most valuable benefits
- 2:2: approximately two months working, then two months off.
- 3:1: approximately three months aboard, then one month off.
- 4:2: approximately four months aboard, then two months off.
- 5:1: approximately five months aboard, then one month off.
Suppose Job A pays $8,000 monthly, or $96,000 annually, with limited leave. Job B pays $7,000 monthly, or $84,000 annually, but provides approximately six months of scheduled leave. Job A pays $12,000 more, but Job B may offer far greater lifestyle value.
Highest-paying jobs on a yacht
Captain
Large-yacht captains may earn more than $20,000 per month. They carry responsibility for safety, navigation, compliance, crew, operations and owner or management communication.
Chief engineer
Chief engineers manage propulsion, generators, electrical, hydraulics, climate systems, water makers, stabilizers, communications and hotel systems. Large-yacht benchmarks can reach roughly $11,500 to $17,500 monthly.
Head or executive chef
Large-yacht head chefs may command about $10,500 to $16,000 monthly for restaurant-quality service, constantly changing menus and international provisioning.
Purser and senior officers
Pursers may oversee payroll coordination, travel, immigration, expenses, budgets, compliance and guest logistics. Chief and first officers combine navigation, safety, regulation and department leadership. Both can reach low five-figure monthly compensation on large yachts.
Entry-level yacht salaries
Junior deckhands and junior steward/esses commonly begin around $2,500 to $4,000 per month, depending on qualifications, location, vessel size and program. That salary may not look extraordinary, but onboard room and board can make its disposable-income profile very different from the same salary ashore.
Does yacht size affect salary?
Generally, yes. Larger yachts bring more complex systems, larger budgets and crews, additional regulation, departmental hierarchy, higher credential requirements and greater management responsibility. A 100-meter captain may be managing something closer to a floating company than a recreational boat.
First officer vs. bosun
The first officer usually earns more because the position carries higher licensing and responsibility for navigation, watches, drills, safety, passage planning and compliance. On a 40–59m yacht, the benchmark table places first/chief officers at $6,500–$10,000 monthly and bosuns at $4,300–$6,500.
Can working on a superyacht make you rich?
Yachting can create an unusually strong wealth-building environment:
A crew member earning $90,000 and investing half is in a different position from one who spends nearly everything. The opportunity is especially important because yacht careers may end through burnout, health, relationships, children, program changes or a move ashore.
The better career question is: How much yacht income becomes assets that keep producing value after the yacht career ends?
Do yacht crew pay taxes?
Working offshore does not automatically make income tax-free. Citizenship, residency, domicile, employer and payroll structure, where services occur, travel days, treaties, tips, foreign accounts and other income can all matter.
U.S. citizens and resident aliens generally report worldwide income. Working on a foreign-flagged yacht or outside U.S. waters does not by itself remove that obligation.
Foreign Earned Income Exclusion
For 2026, the maximum Foreign Earned Income Exclusion is $132,900 per qualifying person. Eligibility requires a foreign tax home and either the bona fide residence test or physical presence test. The latter generally requires physical presence in foreign countries for 330 full days during a 12-consecutive-month period.
International waters are not themselves a foreign country for this test. Yacht crew therefore need a location-by-location travel record rather than a simple count of days outside the United States.
Qualified-tip deduction
Current federal law provides a temporary deduction of up to $25,000 of qualified tips for tax years 2025 through 2028, subject to occupation, reporting, income and other requirements. Eligibility turns on the worker's facts and the Treasury/IRS list of customarily tipped occupations. A yacht gratuity is not automatically deductible, and a deduction does not make the underlying tip unreportable.
How to compare two yacht offers
Do not compare salary alone. Review:
- Guaranteed salary and currency.
- Tip history and allocation policy.
- Rotation and paid leave.
- Travel, training, medical and insurance benefits.
- Cabin arrangement and expected itinerary.
- Contract term, probation and notice.
- Tax, payroll and residency consequences.
- Advancement and credential support.
- Personal costs during leave.
The useful formula is:
Final verdict
In 2026, yacht compensation can range from roughly $30,000 annually for junior roles to well above $200,000 for senior captains, engineers, chefs and specialized professionals. Tips may add thousands or tens of thousands more. Onboard housing and meals can reduce costs, while rotation may add major lifestyle value.
That is what Below Deck gets right: crew can make meaningful money. But the tip meeting is only one part of the equation. What matters is what the crew member keeps—and whether that cash flow becomes long-term wealth.
